God Sustains All Things

God Sustains All Things

God Sustains All Things

And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.(Colossians 1:17)
The Bible teaches that God not only created the universe but that he upholds and sustains it day by day, hour by hour. Scripture says that Christ, the son of God, upholds the universe by the word of his power. (Hebrews 1:3) As theologian A.H. Strong said, “Christ is the originator and the upholder of the universe…..In Him it consists, or holds together, from hour to hour. The steady will of Christ constitutes the law of the universe and makes it a cosmos instead of chaos, just as His will brought it into being in the beginning.”
All things are indebted for their existence to the continuous sustaining action of God exercised through his Son. Nothing exists of its own inherent power of being. Nothing in all creation stands or acts independently of the Lords will. The so-called laws of nature are nothing more than the physical expression of the steady will of Christ. The law of gravity operates with unceasing certainty because Christ continuously wills it to operate. The chair I am sitting on while I write these words holds together because the atoms and molecules in the wood are held in place by his active will. The stars continue their courses because he keeps them there. Scripture says that it is God “, by twho brings out their host but number calling them all by name, by the greatness of His might, and because He is strong in power not one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26)
God’s sustaining action in Christ goes beyond the inanimate creation. The Bible says He gives life to everything: “He prepares rain for the earth; He gives the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry”(Psalm 147:8-9)
God did not simply create and walk away. He constantly sustains that which He created.
What a glorious thought Jerry Bridges gives us in his book Trusting God.
We are told in the Bible that humans are God’s masterpiece in creation. Picture the Creator scooping up a handful of dust and lovingly molding it into its form, breathing His very breath into it and putting it into an incredible place of blessing and provision. That’s how it began. This was God’s plan and intention. Any other perception has no biblical support.
The second thing we are told in the Bible is that Christ builds his church. It’s important to note here that the church is not buildings or institutions but people. People who have repented of their sins and have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. People who are flawed and fail but keep pursuing their relationship with God.
Whatever happens in this world, whatever the future holds, we know that God, our Father holds all things together by His own power. This means that just as He holds the universe together, as sure as the moon and earth and sun and planets and galaxies keep their orbits, He holds His people together. He builds, increases and expands His creation.
Though Satan, the destroyer tries repeatedly to bring destruction and devastation, God holds all things together. I have no doubt that Satan attempts to move the sun, moon, and stars from their God-planned path. He no doubt wishes to create chaos instead of order, but they stay in their orbits just as God ordered. In the same way, I have no doubt that Satan desires to bring disorder to our lives and often does so for a season. In those seasons, chaos seems to be forever, but in due time, God’s order will transform chaos into Gods plan and purpose for us. Keep putting yourself, your future into the Creator’s hands and plans and see chaos become beautiful order.
Jesus, addressing the care of God says this:
Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
